Most of us know at least three things about Japan. The first popping into my mind is: ''The land of the rising Sun.'' Do you know why we refer to  Japan as such? As a child I always thought, that perhaps it is never dark here, then later on I thought maybe the Sun rises early. Now as a grown up of course I know that the former isn't true, as for the latter, I actually think the Sun rises early here. But the origin of the phrase actually lies in the Chinese characters known as Kanji in Japanese: 日本 (Nihon, Nippon).
It means ''the origin of the Sun''. 

The second fact that comes to mind is of course the cultural export coming from Japan, including but not limited to, anime, manga, Super Mario, Studio Ghibli, Japanese music and so on.  Whether you grew up influenced by these phenomena or you have raised children who did, it is undeniable that they made a huge impact worldwide.

Thirdly, food. Japan is always on the top of the list of places that are referred to as heaven for Foodies and those who seek culinary excellence. Food is always prepared with the freshest of ingredients, promoting local delicacies and never forgetting a beautiful presentation. Main ingredients in Japanese cooking include fish, soy sauce and miso to just mention a few. You either love it or hate it. 

You don't have to be knowledgable in the ''kawaii'' (cute) culture, nor do you have to be a Gourmet in order to want to explore Japan. All you have to be is adventurous.
